The short version

We collect as little as we can get away with, and we do not sell your data. We do not run any third party advertising right now. Everything on this page is what we collect ourselves, which is very little.

What we collect when you search

Your question. To answer it we send it to a search provider to fetch live results, and to the service that runs our language model. Questions and their answers are also kept briefly, under an hour, so an identical question from anyone does not have to be paid for twice. That store holds the question and the answer only, with nothing about who asked. Your identity is not attached to either request. Your question is never used to train any model.

Server logs. Each search writes one line to our logs holding the question text, how long it took, how many sources were used, and whether it failed. We use these to find bugs and slow queries.

Your IP address. Held in memory only, to enforce rate limits and stop abuse. It is not written to a database and is forgotten when the limit window passes.

Your rough location, only if you turn it on. Location is off unless you switch it on yourself, and you can switch it back off at any time. When it is on, your coordinates are rounded to two decimal places, roughly a kilometre, before they leave your device. That rounded position is passed to the search provider so local questions like the weather return local answers, and it is told to the model so it knows roughly where you are asking from. It is never written to our database and never attached to your account. It exists for the length of one search.

If you use Match, and upload a resume

We do not keep it. The file is read in memory to pull the text out, used for that one search, and dropped when the request ends. It is never written to our database, never written to our logs, never attached to your account, and never used to train anything. Nothing about a Match run is recorded except that one happened, how many postings it looked at, and how long it took. Close the tab and there is nothing of it left on our side.

What leaves our server. The text of the resume is sent to Groq, the same service that writes every answer on this site, so a model can read it. Job titles and a location drawn from it are sent to Brave Search to find openings. Your name, your address, and your phone number are not needed for either of those and are not sent deliberately; if they sit inside the resume text itself, that text is what goes to Groq. If that is more than you want to share, remove your contact details from the file before uploading it, or paste in only the parts you want read.

What we collect if you make an account

Your email address. This is the only thing we require. There is no password and no phone number.

A display name and picture, if you add them. Both are optional and both live on your settings page, where you can change or remove them at any time. Pictures are cropped and compressed by your own browser before they reach us.

Your search history. The questions you ask while signed in, with the time you asked them.

Answers you save. The answer text and its source links, kept as they were when you saved them.

If you are signed out, none of this is recorded against you.

Cookies

We set one cookie of our own, named foxhole_session, only after you sign in. It keeps you signed in and does nothing else. We do not run any advertising or analytics cookies.

Who else sees your data

Brave Search. Your question is sent to the Brave Search API to fetch live results. Your identity is not sent with it.

Groq. Your question and the search results are sent to Groq, which runs the open source model that writes the answer. Nothing identifying you goes with it.

Weather, time, and dictionary lookups. A question that gets one of the cards above the answer, such as the weather or a definition, sends the relevant part of it, a place name, a word, a team, to the specific service that answers it: Open-Meteo, Wiktionary, Datamuse, or ESPN. Only the part of your question that service needs goes to it, and your identity does not.

A business you ask about. A question about a business's hours reads the same public search results everyone gets, so nothing extra is sent anywhere for it.

Resend. When you request a sign in link, your email address is passed to Resend so they can deliver that message.

That is the complete list. We do not share, sell, rent, or trade your data with anyone else, and we have never received a government request for it. We do not currently run any advertising, so no advertising network sees any of this.

How long we keep things

Sign in links expire after fifteen minutes and stop working once used. Sessions expire after sixty days. Search history and saved answers stay until you delete them or delete your account. Server logs are kept only as long as they are useful for debugging.

Deleting your data

You can remove any saved answer from your account page. To delete your account and everything attached to it, email [email protected] from the address on the account and we will erase it. We are building a button for this; until it exists, the email works and we will confirm when it is done.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have the right to see what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or take it elsewhere. Ask us and we will do it. We will not charge you or make it difficult, and we will not treat you differently for asking.

Advertising and shopping links

Foxhole Web does not currently carry any advertising. If that changes, an advert will always be labelled as one, will never appear inside an answer, and will never be able to influence what an answer says, which sources it uses, or how they are ordered. That separation is the point of the product and it is not for sale, regardless of who is buying ads.

When a question is about buying something, a labelled shopping link may appear below the answer, and some links to shops carry an affiliate tag. Either way we earn a small commission if you buy something after following one. The tag is added by our own server when the page is built, so no third party script sees you and nothing is shared with anyone unless you actually click through, at which point the shop sees you the same as it would from any link. It never affects which sources appear, their order, or what the answer says. Where a page contains such a link, we say so on that page.

Children

Foxhole Web is not aimed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has made an account, tell us and we will remove it.

Security

Sign in tokens and session identifiers are stored hashed, never in readable form. Traffic is served over HTTPS. That said, this is an early product run by a small team, and no service can promise perfect security.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Material changes affecting people with accounts will be emailed to them.
